Repainting your home is a great way to transform its look, curb appeal, or even its style. Painting is probably the easiest and most inexpensive way to refresh a home without undergoing renovations. As Northern Virginia paint experts, we do recognize it can be tough to select a paint color, so we thought we’d offer some tips.

                1) Inspiration. Look for inspiration to select a color. There are several places to look, including our last post where we discussed color trends for 2020! We also suggest browsing the website of paint companies such as Sherwin WilliamsBenjamin MoorePratt and Lambert, and Farrow and Ball. Look for additional color inspiration on Houzz.com and at retailers such as Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware. We’re always happy to provide guidance with color selection. Clients with a new project are entitled to a one-hour free color consultation we offer with a professional interior designer.

               2) How do you use the space? While you’re looking for color inspiration, also consider how you use the room. Is it a place to relax, work, or play? Color can influence mood. What mood would you like to create? You can read more about this in a previous blog post.

               3) What’s in the space? Before you select a paint color, you should consider the other features in the room, such as its furniture and design elements. Wall color is just one feature, and it needs to complement other elements or items in the space for a cohesive and professional look. Consider other colors in the space, including the colors of the floor, furniture, architectural details such as moldings, and soft fabrics such as curtains or cushions.

               4) Paint samples: Always put up several paint samples on at least two walls of the room before settling on a color. Paint a square no less than one foot by two feet. Select walls that receive different amounts of natural lighting. Check the colors throughout the day, because as natural light shifts, so might the appearance of the color.

As experienced paint contractors in Northern Virginia, there’s a chance we may have worked with one of the colors you are considering and can offer some advice. Please contact us if you’d like an estimate for your paint project or one of the other services we offer!
